The mouth of the Dart is protected by two fortified castles, Kingswear Castle and Dartmouth Castle. Dartmouth is linked to the other side of the River Dart, by vehicular and passenger only ferries to Kingswear, and the nearest bridge across the River Dart is in Totnes. Aside from Totnes, other towns nearby to Dartmouth are Kingsbridge and Slapton. Each year at the end of August, the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place in Dartmouth.
