Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery Report - 30/11/12
TROUT FISHING
Despite the cold weather starting to kick in, the trout are still up in the water and the fishing is still good. Buzzers are still coming off the water and the trout are still smashing the fry. Best trout recently reported was a 7lb brownie which was caught by Mark Stow from Ulverston. Mark was Pike fishing and accidently hooked the Trout on a Pike lure. The fish was taken from the car park area of the lake from a boat. Novice angler Dave Almond from Wigan fished spinner from the boats and landed a brace of rainbows to 3lb. Meanwhile also fishing from the boats was Stuart Carruth from Glasgow. Stuart employed a cormorant fly on an intermediate line to catch and safely release 3 Brown Trout to 1lb 8oz. Hawkshead Angling Club member Dave Bell has had a couple of productive bank sessions fishing legered worm. Dave landed 2 rainbows and 4 brownies to 2lb+. Bob Walker and Andy Dawson from Leeds fished from the boats with spinners and caught and released two quality Brown Trout. Unfortunately neither fish was weighed and both were released to fight another day!
PIKE FISHING
Both bank and boat anglers are reporting some quality fish. Hawkshead Angling Club member Tim Carswell fished static deadbait from the bank and landed an 8lb and a 16lb Pike respectively! Geoff Birtwistle from Bury fished from the boats and landed a cracking 19lb 8oz beauty on static deadbait. Meanwhile Big s club member John Ashurst from Wigan caught an 18lb, 20lb 8oz a 21lb and a 22lb Pike. All fish were caught from the boat on static deadbaits and lures. Mark Billington from Sedbergh employed David Coleman on a guided Pike fishing trip and landed a mint 25lb predator on static mackerel deadbait. Mark also lost another big fish at the net to complete another successful trip out on Esthwaite Water. One of the largest Pike to be caught on rod and line in the UK was reported to fisheries staff last week. Jeff Dandy from Barrow in Furness was fishing from the boats with his mate and landed a huge 46lb 1oz Pike, on static Roach deadbait. Unfortunately the pair could not give a picture as they didn?t have a camera with them. Fisheries staff have checked Jeff?s set of digital scales and they were found to be accurate. On the coarse fishing front venue regular Martin Winward from Barrow in Furness fished maggot on the tip and reported a nice bag of Roach, tipping the scales at 27lb! Andy's Fishing Diary
For this weeks write up I'd like to tell you about some of the other fishing work that I get involved with. Get Hooked on Fishing is a national charity, (GHoF) has fifteen projects sited all over the UK from as far north as Glasgow down to the most southerly project of Ealing. GHoF aims to offer opportunities to young people and create brighter futures for all involved; we do that by running informative, fun, fishing sessions. I work part time for the Bolton project which is based at Bradshaw Hall fishery, the fishery owners have allowed us to base a small classroom on site which is brilliant as we tend to work mostly with local school groups throughout term times each year. Often a school group will book in for a series of sessions during the spring, summer or autumn term and by the end of the period the youngsters have a good base of angling knowledge. We start the youngsters on 4 metre whips or short poles and over the next few weeks we gradually progress so that all of the kids get the chance to learn about several methods of fishing. By the end of the series of sessions most students will have had the opportunity to learn about float or feeder fishing, pellet waggler or carp tactics and in the winter months the kids who are brave enough to face the cold, come out pike fishing. I firmly believe that fishing can help young people to respect their surroundings and get more appreciation for our beautiful countryside. Some of the youngsters that I have worked with have commented that they have never seen places like the ones we've fished and it's this contact with the outdoors that can fire the imagination and broaden horizons. Occasionally we work with young people who have had a tough time during their childhood which has resulted in poor or antisocial behaviour; too often these kids don't get the chance to redeem themselves. I can say with total confidence that angling helps youngsters like this to relax and calm down to a level where their mentors or project workers can really get through to them and great achievements can be made. Each GHoF project has professionally qualified angling coaches on the staff as well as a voluntary team of peer mentors. The peer mentors are usually children who have been recipients of GHoF fishing sessions due to them attending with their school. If they show aptitude for fishing and a desire to help others learn we harness this and make them peer mentors, of course this is only done if the child wants to take on the responsibility. One of the Bolton project's peer mentors has recently won an award with Bolton council for being Young Volunteer of the Year, something that he, his family and the wider GHoF team are very proud of! Focussing back on Improve Your Fishing and my tutorial work... I have several sessions coming up during the next week or so. They are mostly in the pursuit of toothy crocs (pike) however I am doing a winter carp session with a regular customer of mine in a few days time. We will be covering specialist winter rigs, bait presentations and bait applications. My lines of attack will focus on three rigs, the chod, the stiff hinged rig and a fluorocarbon bottom bait presentation with a supple hair tied in. The rigs will be baited with my favourite winter carp sweets, the choddy and the hinged rig will have either a Mainline Pineapple pop up or a Sticky Baits Buchu Berry pop up on, the colour of these baits coupled with the intense fish attractors in the baits have worked for me many times in past winters. We'll also be fishing the bottom bait rig with Cell boilies on the supple hair as well as in a very small pva mesh stick. I'll use my Korda Krusha to crumb up the cell boilies to a fine powder which will go in the pva stick nicely. If these approaches fail then I'm going to go to plan B, which involves a pint of maggots. I've got out of jail in the past with maggots presented on a maggot clip along with a few buoyant fake ones added to balance the rig out. I'll let you know how we get on, in the mean time, good luck in your fishing and tight lines! Andy

Andy's Fishing Diary
With the plumbers in at 'Casa Ormrod' this week fitting a new boiler I knew that being out of the house wouldn't be any hardship this weekend. I was up and scraping the frost off the car before first light and then intrepidly following the twenty or so metres of road that I could see through the thick freezing fog over the tops from Bolton to Blackburn. I arrived at my destination as the murky dawn was well on its way to illuminating my surroundings and instead of the usual water side car park I was in Blackburn town centre. Normally most Saturdays see me hosting a tutorial but this Saturday I had the honour of making my third appearance of the year on BBC Radio Lancashire's weekly fishing programme "At The Waters Edge". The programme is a long running half hourly broadcast which goes out at 7pm on Thursday evenings each week. The host is none other than the award winning angler, consultant, broadcaster and writer Martin James MBE. I met Martin and we proceeded to discuss lots of angling related subjects, Martin asked me how 2012 had been in terms of my fishing and tutorials as well as my ambitions for 2013. We discussed how involving youngsters and disabled anglers is the key to the future of the sport as well as having an interesting chat about rigs. The programme will be broadcast on Thursday 13th December (95.5FM, 103.9FM, 104.5FM) and available all of that week on the BBC I-Player if you fancy a listen. I've managed to get out and do a little piking myself and although it's been a battle I managed to land this low double figure fish. The weather, as everyone knows, has been awful and really detrimental to the pike fishing. Pike feed by utilising lots of different senses, they feel movement through their lateral line, they scent baits as well as spotting prey visually. I have found that when my local waters are full of lots of run-off water (from surrounding farm land) they colour up very quickly and once this happens the sport takes a nose-dive. I have found that the only way to combat this is to regularly re-cast throughout the day, searching through the water by varying the depth on the float set ups to find the pike and I make sure my baits are as fresh as possible too. I've had most of my success this winter on naturally occurring baits such as roach. My favourite bait is smelt and I'm sure they will start working as soon as we have some settled weather. As we are approaching the Christmas season my better half has been asking me what I would like for birthday and Christmas presents (I have a December birthday, I'm 29 again if anyone is interested!) so I've been having a look at various gift ideas for anglers. I've got to say I'm interested in vouchers from my favourite carp bait supplier which will allow me to get what I want when I want it. Getting a gift voucher is brilliant because it's quick and easy and you can buy all of those little bits that are so important at the beginning of the year when those carp begin to wake up from their winter slumber. Many anglers look to stock up on bait making products and get a good stock of boilies in the freezer, I'll be investing in various fake baits as well as a good selection of flouro pop ups in case we get a mild week or so in early Jan or Feb. It's worth getting things sorted because even though it seems like the winter drags on and on, it'll be spring before we know it. On that optimistic note I'll go. Good luck in your fishing this week and tight lines!

Andy's Fishing Diary
Last week has been a bit uneventful, I've been suffering with 'man-flu' and I've had to spend a few 'admin' days in the office which has meant I've hardly been on the bank. This week I'll take the opportunity to tell you a little about my business Improve Your Fishing, in a nut shell I help various types of anglers to expand their knowledge in their chosen aspect of coarse fishing. During the spring, summer and autumn months I help complete beginners to learn the basics in coarse fishing from plumbing the depth with a waggler float to learning to use a disgorger correctly. My customers are often fathers and sons who take advantage of my dad and lad fishing days where they both learn a couple of different methods of catching fish, often after a session they then go away, buy a bit of kit and get started. I also have customers who haven't fished in a long time and want to learn about new methods or just want to polish their skills a little. As you already know from my previous write-ups I run beginners pike fishing tutorials during winter and some of these will feature in future newsletters. I enjoy all forms of angling but my first love has to be for carp fishing. Therefore my strongest suit (as a tutor) are my carp fishing tutorial sessions. The sessions can range in length from a day of 8 hours through to a 24 or 48 hour session, I also offer week long introduction to French carp fishing tutorials during the summer months. The day sessions tend to be focussed towards covering the basics in casting technique, bite indication, rig tying, fish care and angling ethics/etiquette. This type of day suits the angler who has already done a little coarse fishing before but is now eager to target bigger carp using bite alarms, hair rigs and boilies for the first time. The 24 or 48 hour sessions recap on the basics but we then look to cover things like feathering the cast and feeling the lead down, in depth rig tying, splicing leadcore, spod and marker work, watercraft, fish behaviour, bait application, photography of your capture, and all the do's and don't of night fishing as well as much more. The longer sessions generally suit the angler who hasn't done a great deal of night fishing and maybe feels a little daunted by it, or the angler who is looking to tackle different waters and possibly travel further afield. I use a number of different venues around the North West such as Bradshaw Hall, Wyreside, Langley Lakes, Four Seasons and Hurlston Hall. I also like to get down to Linear fisheries in Oxford, the famously clear, weedy gravel pits at Linear offer the angler a new challenge as well as a realistic chance of catching a 30lb fish to boot! Each year I have a limited opportunity to take a small groups of anglers over to France, this year I accompanied a young man and his dad across the channel for their first taste of French carping. We visited the fantastic Etang Marolles which boasts beautiful surroundings, brilliant fishing and great facilities in Northern France. I provide all of the tackle and bait for all of my tutorials, this can include bivvys, bedchairs and sleeping bags for over night sessions if necessary. I have found that over previous years many customers like to buy a session or series of sessions as a Birthday or Christmas gift for a youngster, others have bought a gift voucher for a colleague as a retirement present and wives have bought a voucher in the attempt at getting their husband out of the way or out of the pub! Emailed vouchers don't cost any more and can be printed off and given as a present inside a card. Each voucher comes with an accompanying letter which explains a little about me and the type of session which has been arranged. I'm fully qualified to teach angling professionally and work with children and every session is fully insured. All documentation, information and my contact details can be found on my website. Above are a few pictures from previous carp fishing tutorials, the first is from France last year, the next is from a 24h tutorial at Four Seasons (near Blackpool). If you are interested in buying a voucher for an angler or budding fisherman in your life as a Christmas present, or if you fancy a carp, pike or coarse fishing tutorial get in touch and get one gift out of the way! Tight lines. Andy
